There are over 50 opportunities to serve in different ministries in PBC, from one-off to regular. You could do boiler checks, make rotas or cakes, design displays, clean a fridge, cut toenails, operate a camera, welcome new people, help a child with special needs, organise games or crafts, and more. These are great opportunities to use our God-given skills and get to know others.

Administration

 

Aesthetics Group member

  • Description: We are looking for new members of the Church Aesthetics team to help us provide advice to the Deacons on decoration and condition of the church building.

  • Skills Required: Willingness to work with others to ensure the church building is well maintained, welcoming and fit for purpose.

  • Time Commitment: Varied – occasional meetings plus follow-up.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

First Aid Kit – check and annual audit

  • Description: To check the inventory and contents expiry dates of The three church first Aid kits, replenish as required. Update office manager when supplies run low. Quarterly check that signage is correct. Check Accident book has sufficient ‘pages’ left for the month.

  • Skills Required: Knowledge of requirements for first Aid kits.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour per month.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

 

Boiler Check

  • Description: To check the three boilers in the boiler house fortnightly for error codes and to check the water pressure is within limits.
    Fill in log record and report any faults to office.

  • Skills Required: No technical knowledge required, you will be shown how to carry out the checks.

  • Time Commitment: 10-20 minutes per session, time to suit you.

  • Frequency: Fortnightly.

 

Water temperature monitor

  • Description: To check and log the temperature of the cold water tanks bi- annually.
    To check and log the temperature of the hot water tanks and nearest tap quarterly.

  • Skills Required: You need to be able to access the loft space and use a digital thermometer.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour approx. Flexible day/ time, but daytime access easiest on a Thursday.

  • Frequency: Quarterly.

 

Portable electrical appliance log and testing

  • Description: Carry out an annual update for the list of portable electrical appliances used in the building.
    Carry out annual PAT testing on all portable appliances.

  • Skills Required: Be competent (or willing to train to become competent) in use of our PAT testing machine.

  • Time Commitment: 2-3 hours, your choice of time.

  • Frequency: Annual.

Coordinator – Rotational Deep Cleansing of PBC kitchens

  • Description: To organise a small team of helpers to help keep on top of deep cleaning of three kitchen areas of church – main/ sports hall and upper room.

    To include:

    – defrost and clean fridges on rotation

    – empty cupboards and clean interiors on rotation

    – once every 6 months to clean underneath and down back of appliances

  • Skills Required: No experience required.

  • Time Commitment: A few hours every 6 months.

  • Frequency: Twice a year.

 

Kitchen cleaning

  • Description: Help in a small team for deep cleaning of three kitchen areas of church, including defrosting and cleaning fridges, emptying and cleaning cupboards, cleaning under and behind appliances.

  • Skills Required: No experience required.

  • Time Commitment: A few hours. Flexible time/day.

  • Frequency: Bi-annual or less.

Member of maintenance group

  • Description: Join Maintenance What’s app group and be notified of various DIY jobs, around the church for purposes of volunteering to carry out small DIY tasks.

  • Skills Required: No experience – DIY skills helpful.

  • Time Commitment: Varied, your choice.

  • Frequency: You volunteer when a job comes up that you have the time to undertake.

  

Gardening

  • Description: To help with the maintenance of the small areas of cultivated land in the rear garden, and assist gardening team members to help with weeding around the paved areas.

  • Skills Required: Happy to potter in the garden.

  • Time Commitment: Varied, flexible days and times.

  • Frequency: Seasonal

Church Ministry

 

Display creater / helper

  • Description: Helping install the visual displays at the front of church, though we are also keen to speak to people who might like to design and create displays too.

  • Skills Required: Helpers – able to help move materials into and around the church, get up and down ladders etc. Creators – energy and passion for creating display features that facilitate worship.

  • Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per session, approx. Days/ timing is flexible for installing displays.

  • Frequency: Every few weeks.

Visual Media Operator (Proclaim)

  • Description: Helping to run the Sunday morning media- Running the software that manages the content to the projectors during a service. This means moving on the song words with the music and clicking through the prepared content through the service.

  • Skills Required: Confidence with a PC needed. The Proclaim software can be learnt very easily. It is no more difficult than running Powerpoint.

  • Time Commitment: 3 hours on a Sunday.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

 

Visual Media Preparation (Proclaim)

  • Description: Taking the information sent by email on a Friday or Saturday and preparing the schedule in our ‘Proclaim’ software. As the software is a Cloud service it can be done from any PC on internet, ie, at home.

  • Skills Required: This would require experience of the Proclaim Operator role and some more training on further aspects of Proclaim. This is not complicated software and can be learnt by anyone confident on a PC.

  • Time Commitment: 0.5 to 1 hour on a Friday or Saturday.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

 

Camera / livestream operator

  • Description: Operating the cameras and livestream software for a Sunday service. This means being at the church for 10.15am when on duty.

  • Skills Required: Confidence with a PC needed. Interest in video work or photography helpful but not essential.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours on a Sunday morning.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

 

Sound Operator

  • Description: Running the sound desk for the rehearsal and service. Setting up the mics before the rehearsals and mixing the sound during the service.

  • Skills Required: Some experience on a sound desk is preferable but with a musical ear and some interest in technology the gaps can be filled! We can offer experienced training and the individual would shadow for as long as needed and can be paired with an experienced operator for as long as required.

  • Time Commitment: 3 hours on a Sunday morning.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

Sunday service involvement

  • Description: Doing a bible reading or leading intercessory prayers during a service on a Sunday morning. For intercessory prayers, taking time to discern what would be a good focus, gathering details and preparing what you will bring to lead the church in these prayers.

  • Skills Required: Confident to read and speak in front of a large number of people. For reading (and prayers), ability to read slowly and clearly so that the congregation can follow. For intercessory prayers, aware of relevant needs for prayer within our church, ministries, community and the wider world. People will be available to help you practice if you wish.

  • Time Commitment: 5-10 minutes on a Sunday morning, plus preparation time.

  • Frequency: Monthly or less (on rota).

Participant in worship team

  • Description: Playing music or singing for PBC services.

  • Skills Required: Confident musician or singer. Ability to read music or follow chords to play is helpful.

  • Time Commitment: 3 hours, 9-12 on a Sunday.

  • Frequency: Weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Community

 

General helper

  • Description: Assisting with setting up and clearing, serving refreshments to customers. May include baking if you want.

  • Skills Required: Training given, physically able to carry trays. Interest in people.

  • Time Commitment: 2-3 hours on Friday mornings.

  • Frequency: Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly or Relief during holiday periods.

 

Set up person

  • Description: Setting up tables & chairs before cafe.

  • Skills Required: Physically able to move table and chairs.

  • Time Commitment: 0.5 – 1 hour on a Friday morning or Thursday evening.

  • Frequency: Weekly, Fortnightly or Monthly.

 

Baker (Almond Tree)

  • Description: Provision of home baking, delivering to church premises for 10am Friday morning.

  • Skills Required: Baking experience. Food hygiene qualification (training can be provided for this). Awareness of allergy policy. May need to register with Perth Council.

  • Time Commitment: Varied.

  • Frequency: Varied.

 

Dishwasher

  • Description: Washing cups and plates.

  • Skills Required: Physically able to carry trays of cups and plates and use upright dishwasher (training provided).

  • Time Commitment: 3 hours on a Friday morning.

  • Frequency: Weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

 

Treasurer (Almond Tree)

  • Description: Checking and documenting weekly takings. Liaising with church treasurer. Disbursing expenses where required.

  • Skills Required: Use of spreadsheets and email. Numeracy skills. Confidence in handling money.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour at a your choice of time.

  • Frequency: Weekly.

 

Befriender

  • Description: Befriending, chatting to visitors who are on their own or new and would like some company.

  • Skills Required: Friendly and sensitive, able to chat to strangers.

  • Time Commitment: 1-3 hours on a Friday 10-12.

  • Frequency: Weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

 

Session team leader

  • Description: Opening and closing building according to protocols. Completing weekly report sheets. Supervision of all cafe roles. Coordination of baking provision on WhatsApp.

  • Skills Required: Church key holder. Knowledge of all necessary protocols. Use of coffee machines and dishwasher.
    Communication skills.
    Hygiene certificate.

  • Time Commitment: 4 hours on a Fridiay morning.

  • Frequency: Monthly, Relief during holiday periods.

 

Administrator

  • Description: Co-ordinating and producing quarterly rota and preparing flyer of events and ad hoc administration.

  • Skills Required: Excel and word or similar IT skills.
    Access to own computer or laptop.

  • Time Commitment: Varied, from home.

  • Frequency: Varied.

Alpha facilitator

  • Description: Alpha facilitators work as part of a team to run Alpha at PBC.

  • Skills Required: Needed: Passion for evangelism, ability to talk to new people in a small group setting, comfortable facilitating conversation about faith (training can be provided), commitment to prayer, willingness to practically serve (refreshments, tidy up etc)
    Helpful: previous experience of sharing faith, ability to use technology to show Alpha content.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours a week for 9/10 weeks.

  • Frequency: Up to twice a year (spring and autumn).

Filling shoeboxes

  • Description: Selecting and buying suitable items to fill a shoebox, against a checklist. Bring the box to church.

  • Skills Required: Attention to detail, creativity and care. Generosity. Shopping skills and time.

  • Time Commitment: Several hours, flexible times.

  • Frequency: Annual, in the autumn.

 

Sorting/ checking shoeboxes

  • Description: Going through individual shoeboxes as part of a team during a sorting day, to ensure they have all the correct items. Adding suitable itmes or removing unsuitable items and selecting replacements.

  • Skills Required: Willingness to help and work alongside others, attention to detail and a bit of common sense.

  • Time Commitment: 2-3 hours or more, one or more times. Daytime or some evenings.

  • Frequency: Annual – several sessions available during a week in November.

 

Loading/ unloading shoeboxes

  • Description: Helping to move and load shoeboxes to/from a container to the sports hall, or into a lorry.

  • Skills Required: Able to carry shoeboxes of different sizes, some in big packing boxes. Able to carry heavy loads safely. May need to climb into the lorry. Tetris skills for packing into the lorry!

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour or more, on one or more days in November, usually daytime, sometimes a Sunday.

  • Frequency: Annual.

Befriender

  • Description: A CAP befriender is someone who accompanies a debt coach on client visits. The debt coach is responsible for collecting financial information and communicating CAP’s financial input. The befriender focuses on the non-debt related needs of clients, building relationships, and providing moral support, encouragement, and practical assistance to help them become debt-free and connect with their community and where possible a local church.

  • Skills Required: Undergo a PVG check.
    Willingness to complete CAP’s befriender training (usually delivered online).
    A heart for people and willingness to help clients who are often in very challenging situations.
    A willingness to share the Gospel and personal testimony appropriately.
    Previous experience in caring/sharing faith is helpful.
    No financial expertise is required!

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours for 3 weeks then varied.

  • Frequency: Varied.

Money Coach

  • Description: To become a Money Coach which helps people set a budget, learn how to manage it and then save. Then deliver the course to other people from the community.

  • Skills Required: PVG, trained by Christians Against Poverty, interest in helping people, good communication skills.

  • Time Commitment: 4 sessions of 2 hours.

  • Frequency: Up to 3 courses a year.

 

Publicity co-ordinator

  • Description: To raise awareness of the CAP Money Coaching courses in the community and to connect with other organisations to help achieve this.

  • Skills Required: Good communication skills and an ability to network in community settings.

  • Time Commitment: You choose when!

  • Frequency: Monthly.

Planning Team member

  • Description: Being part of a small team which plans ahead for Family Outreach events during the year. Typically we plan events at Easter, the Community BBQ in the summer, the Light Party at Halloween and in the run-up to Christmas.
    Planning meetings are spread throughout the year along with, where possible, attendance at the events.

  • Skills Required: Experience of working with families and children.
    Passion to share the Gospel with families and children.
    Ability to think creatively about ways to engage families and children.
    Willingness to practically help and lead the Outreach events.

  • Time Commitment: A weekday evening up to 4 times a year.

  • Frequency: Varied.

 

Event helper

  • Description: Helping out at Family Outreach events which happen throughout the year on a roughly quarterly pattern (e.g. Easter, Halloween, Summer, Christmas).
    Various roles are required including welcoming, serving refreshments, overseeing crafts or leading activities, setting up before events and tidying up after events

  • Skills Required: Experience of working with families and children.
    Willingness to share the Gospel with families and children.

  • Time Commitment: Varied.

  • Frequency: Quarterly.

Nail clipper

  • Description: Clipping toenails for people who are unable to do their own.

  • Skills Required: Gentle and friendly attitude. Comfortable to touch other people’s feet! No experience required. Training given.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours on a Friday morning.

  • Frequency: Monthly or less (on rota).

 

Meet and greet

  • Description: Being a friendly welcoming person to go and meet clients in Almond Tree Café and bring them through to Footwise for their treatment. These clients will have pre-booked so will be expecting to come through.

  • Skills Required: Friendly. Comfortable to approach people.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours on a Friday morning.

  • Frequency: Monthly or less (on rota).

Group Leader

  • Description: To be responsible for a small group of primary aged children helping them with crafts, games and teaching them the bible story.

  • Skills Required: PVG is required. Ability to connect with primary aged children.

  • Time Commitment: 7 hours for Activity Days (8.30 – 3.30) or 4 hours x 5 days (mornings) for Holiday Club in August.

  • Frequency: Activity Days November, February, ?, Holiday club in early/mid August.

 

Background Team Member

  • Description: Helping at Activity Day or Holiday Club in kitchen or at craft table.

  • Skills Required: PVG required, ability to engage with primary aged children.

  • Time Commitment: Up to 7 hours x3 a year (Activity Days) or up to 4 hours x5 mornings in Aug (Holiday Club).

  • Frequency: Activity Days November, February, ?, Holiday club in early/mid August.

 

1-1 Helper

  • Description: 1-1 helper with a primary aged child who needs extra support to engage in activities.

  • Skills Required: PVG required. Ability to connect with a primary aged child.

  • Time Commitment: Up to 7 hours x3 a year (Activity Days) or up to 4 hours x5 mornings in Aug (Holiday Club).

  • Frequency: Can do one or more events. Activity Days – one day in November, February, ?, Holiday club is Monday-Fri one week in early/mid August.

Holiday@Home Planning Team

  • Description: Attend monthly planning meetings from February to June.
    Help to plan the outings and activities for Holiday@Home.
    Participate in H@H summer outings (3 over the course of a week).
    Work together with Open Circle to arrange joint Christmas and Easter events.

  • Skills Required: Have a compassionate, understanding approach towards older people.
    Be willing to reach out to older people, sharing your faith and encouraging them to participate fully in Holiday @ Home.
    Good communication skills.
    Organisational skills.
    Problem-solving abilities.
    Able to work as part of a team.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour meeting and 7 hours a day for up to 3 days of outings during Holiday@Home week.

  • Frequency: During Holiday@Home week.

 

Holiday@Home Team

  • Description: Participate in H@H summer outings (3 over the course of a week).

  • Skills Required: Have a compassionate, understanding approach towards older people.
    Be willing to reach out to older people, sharing your faith and encouraging them to participate fully in Holiday @ Home.
    Able to work as part of a team.

  • Time Commitment: 7 hours a day for 3 days in early July.

  • Frequency: Early July.

Speaker

  • Description: Leading a 30 minute monthly service in the Ochil Care Home – a short prayer,  introducing 2 or 3 hymns and giving a short talk.

  • Skills Required: Understanding the needs of the elderly and those with dementia

  • Time Commitment: Under 1 hour monthly on 4th Thursday afternoon of the month 2.30pm.

  • Frequency: Monthly attending the services with the residents, speaking approx every 6 months.

Befriender

  • Description: Sitting with guests, chatting to guests who are on their own or new and would like some company.

  • Skills Required: Care and kindness.

  • Time Commitment: 3 hours per month.

  • Frequency: Third Thursday each month.

Catering assistant

  • Description: Preparation, cooking and serving light lunch.

  • Skills Required: Cooking / catering skills preferable, or willing to learn!

  • Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per month plus preparation time.

  • Frequency: Monthly, third Thursday of the month (daytime). Possibly also a Wednesday for bigger events.

Grant proposal writer

  • Description: Completing applications about Open Circle according to the criteria of a funding grant, in order to help maintain funding for the group.

  • Skills Required: Some financial/ budgeting experience and understanding. Writing skills. Reading with care to understand the requirements of the grant, attention to detail, writing in a positive and accurate manner. Access to computer and internet.

  • Time Commitment: 3+ hours per grant. Day/time flexible.

  • Frequency: Occasional, as needed, up to 2-3 times a year.

Set-up in-charge

  • Description: Organising and assisting helpers to set up tables, serve and clear up after lunch including putting up/ taking down tables and chairs.

  • Skills Required: Time, fit enough to set up tables. Familiar with layout (can learn on the job)

  • Time Commitment: 4 hours per month

  • Frequency: Monthly, third Thursday of the month (daytime).

Set up, serve and clear

  • Description: Setting up tables & chairs before lunch. Serving lunch to guests. Clearing up after lunch – putting tables / chairs away.

  • Skills Required: Time, fit enough to set up tables.

  • Time Commitment: 4 hours per month.

  • Frequency: Monthly, third Thursday of the month (daytime).

Sharing your crafts, skill or interest

  • Description: We sometimes hold a quiz or present a craft activity. We’re sure some people would enjoy sharing their enthusiasm and skills for others to discover.  If you are “well versed” in a topic of interest then we would love to hear from you.

  • Skills Required: An interest, skill or hobby in a topic or activity which you would like to share with others. This could be a craft, knowledge/ quiz, or other skill or interest. Ability to prepare to share it with others. Willingness to stand up in front of a group to share it.

  • Time Commitment: 3-4 hours plus preparation time.

  • Frequency: One-off / once a year, on a Thursday lunchtime (third Thursday of the month).

Thought for the day

  • Description: Present a 5-minute “Thought for the Day” based on the Bible/ Christian faith, at the end of a session, to share with guests in their 50s or older, who will have a mixed faith/ non-faith background.

  • Skills Required: Active Christian faith. Ability to share something engaging, accessible and uplifting/ inspiring from the Bible or your Christian faith with guests.

  • Time Commitment: Present a 5 minute thought, probably visit Open Circle for at least an hour when presenting. Also preparation time.

  • Frequency: Once a year, on a third Thursday of the month, lunchtime.

Treasurer

  • Description: Checking and banking donations. Liaising with church treasurer.  Disbursing expenses where required.

  • Skills Required: Familiarity and experience with basic financial, accounting and banking processes. Honesty.

  • Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per month.

  • Frequency: Monthly, third Thursday of the month (afternoon), plus follow-up. Might be possible in own time if could meet relevant people in own time for distribution and banking.

Make and serve tea, coffee and snacks

  • Description: Make tea, coffee, and plate up snacks. Serve these from the coffee bar to the parents and carers at Pebbles on Tuesday morning (term time only). Load dishwasher and tidy up dishes afterwards.

  • Skills Required: A friendly smile! Hospitality is important in our groups, so we want to be able to serve hot drinks with a smile and engage in a bit of small talk while doing so. Basic knowledge of the kitchen would be helpful. There will be no direct contact with the children, other than from behind the coffee bar. This role is confined to the kitchen. Can be done in a pair, or solo.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours on a Tuesday 10-12.

  • Frequency: Weekly, termtime only.

Pastoral Care

 

Befriender

  • Description: Providing companionship for those who find themselves housebound or isolated by virtue of illness or frailty.

  • Skills Required: A compassionate attitude and willingness to engage with people in need.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour per session. Flexible time/day.

  • Frequency: Varied.

Driver – giving lifts to church

  • Description: Providing transport to and from church for people without transport. Liaising with those people about lifts (once connected by pastoral team).

  • Skills Required: Access to a car with insurance and suitable accessibility. Reliability of car and driving. A willingness of spirit and a compassionate heart.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour on Sundays, possibly other days.

  • Frequency: Weekly or less.

Shopping

  • Description: Buying items needed by someone who can’t do it themselves. Delivering items to a pastoral care befriender. Providing receipts for refund.

  • Skills Required: Able to find and deliver items.

  • Time Commitment: Varied. Flexible day/ time.

  • Frequency: Varied as needed.

Welcoming

 

Serving tea and coffee

  • Description: Preparing and/or serving teas and coffees after services.

  • Skills Required: A warm, welcoming smile, ability to pour hot drinks into mugs, fill and empty dishwasher. Very straightforward! The opportunity is available to learn how to operate the coffee machine if desired but not necessary. We have 4 on the rota each week and the first 2 should arrive around 10am to set up, the 1st one named will provide milk and prepare the coffee machines. The 3rd and 4th on the list only need to come to the kitchen at the end of the service.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour on a Sunday morning after the service.

  • Frequency: Fortnightly, monthly or less – you can choose.

 

Tea and Coffee coordinator

  • Description: Link person between those serving and office for purchasing/ rotas.

  • Skills Required: Listening, aware of rota and kitchen duties.

  • Time Commitment: Some Sundays and varied in own time.

  • Frequency: As needed.

Sunday Welcome

  • Description:

    – Arrive at 10 to welcome at the door.

    – Take special note of new people and advise of facilities and activities.

    – Assist in the service where required.

    – Speak to people after the service, especially new people.

    – Provide information available on the activities in the church.

  • Skills Required: No experience needed.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour on a Sunday (half an hour before and after the service).

  • Frequency: Quarterly or more.

Youth & Children

For outreach activities with children (Under 5s, Holiday Club / Activity Days and Family Outreach), please see Community.

Pack refresh

  • Description: Regular checks of the activity packs available for any child to use in the church, replacing missing items, reprinting materials etc.

  • Skills Required: No experience needed.

  • Time Commitment: 1-2 hours, flexible time.

  • Frequency: Varied, up to 3 or more times a year.

Leader/helper

  • Description: We are looking for an adult to be a ‘pair of hands’ during Connect. They will help set up activities, talk to the children, help with games and craft and bible stories.

  • Skills Required: Experience with children helpful but not essential, PVG required.

  • Time Commitment: Up to 2 hours, Thursday evenings within 5:30-7:30, termtime.

  • Frequency: Weekly, or less if others volunteer.

Supporting child with additional needs

  • Description: 1-2-1 supervision of a child with downs syndrome.

  • Skills Required: Patience, PVG, calm nature, experience is helpful but not required.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour Thursdays 6-7, termtime only.

  • Frequency: Weekly, termtime only.

Rota maker

  • Description: Making up a rota for creche volunteers.

  • Skills Required: No experience required.

  • Time Commitment: 0.5 hours, flexible time.

  • Frequency: Quarterly.

Creche helper

  • Description: Helping to look after babies and small children age 0-3 in creche during the Sunday service. Also helping to set up and tidy away.

  • Skills Required: Friendly and patient. PVG essential. Experience with children age 0-3 an advantage.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours on a Sunday morning.

  • Frequency: Monthly or varied (on rota).

Energize assistant

  • Description: To assist the Energize leader, facilitating discussions, and supporting the youth in any need.

  • Skills Required: PVG essential, no experience required. We offer the training required.

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour on a Sunday morning after the service.

  • Frequency: Monthly.

Leading JAM

  • Description: Lead children’s activities on a Sunday morning.

  • Skills Required: Pvg required, experience with children.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours on a Sunday morning plus preparation time. Termtime only.

Youth Night volunteer

  • Description: Helping to welcome young people, supporting the leaders to run activities, and helping tidy up the hall.

  • Skills Required: PVG essential, no experience required.

  • Time Commitment: 2 hours, Friday nights, sometimes Saturday evening.

  • Frequency: Fortnightly or monthly.
